Dr. Melencia Johnson

Dr. Johnson graduated from Norfolk State University, a historically Black university, with a degree in sociology with an emphasis in criminal justice. She earned her Ph.D. in sociology with an emphasis in criminology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2010. She also has a master’s degree in sociology and a graduate certificate in women’s studies, obtained from SIU Carbondale. Dr. Johnson’s research interests include women and girls’ participation in crime and feminist criminological pedagogy. Her personal interests include history, art, and culture of the African diaspora. She is an active member of the Aiken community, currently serving on the City of Aiken Arts Commission and the Board of Directors for Aiken Downtown Development Association.
